The Politburo of Vietnam will take disciplinary measures against the country's former Prime Minister and President Nguyen Xuan Phuc for bribery, the official website of the Vietnamese government newspaper reported.
The former president is accused of violating party and state principles in the performance of his duties as prime minister, as well as of corruption-related violations, which negatively affects the party's reputation, the government press service explains.
In addition to Nguyen Xuan Phuc, former HEAD of the Central Commission for General Mobilization Truong Thi Mai and former Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh will also face sanctions from the government.
The former president served as prime minister from 2016 to 2021, after which he was elected head of state. He resigned in early 2023 after taking responsibility for violations related to bribery cases in the covid-19 testing industry, BLOOMBERG writes .
In October, Vietnam's parliament elected Army General Luong Cuong as the new president. His predecessor was To Lama, who took office in May 2024 .
