The United States has withdrawn its Navy ships from the Black Sea amid the situation in Ukraine, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby announced at a briefing.
According to Kirby, there is nothing unusual about the withdrawal of ships, since they are "not in the Black Sea all the time": "We regularly send ships to the Black Sea and take them out as needed."
This time the decision was made before the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Kirby said that Washington wanted "to make it clear to everyone that the US has no interest in escalating the conflict."
The Pentagon has not yet decided when the ships will return to the Black Sea, Kirby added. It will depend on the national security interests of the United States, as well as allies and partners.
