The sixth wave of CORONAVIRUS in RUSSIA is quite possible due to the evolutionary potential of the Omicron strain. Sergey Netesov, HEAD of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Virology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Novosibirsk State University, announced this on the air of the NGS.Novosibirsk portal.

“We must not forget that our delta had not yet ended when the omicron began. This is a more typical situation when the omicron wave does not end and the next one starts,” Netesov said.

He added that the omicron strain may be a continuation of the alpha strain of the coronavirus and allowed the continuation of the pandemic with the prevalence of the gamma and delta strains.

“So you need to prepare for the worst, but hope for the best,” Netesov added, recalling vaccination and mask regimen.

According to the operational headquarters, 1,347 cases of covid-19 have been detected in the Novosibirsk region over the past day . In total, 106,926 cases of coronavirus have been registered in the region since the beginning of the pandemic, including 12,740 children. 75,844 patients have been discharged with recovery.
