
Court in Belarus sentences Sergei Tikhanovsky to 18 years in prison
The politician, who was arrested during the 2020 presidential campaign in Belarus, was accused of "obstructing the work of the CEC" and preparing mass riots. After his arrest, his wife Svetlana became the only opposition candidate.
Tikhanovsky was finally charged under Part 1 of Art. 293 of the Criminal Code of Belarus (organization of riots), part 3 of Art. 130 (inciting social hatred), part 2 of Art. 191 (obstructing the work of the CEC), part 1 of Art. 342 (organization of actions grossly violating public order). While Russia is in favor of long-term gas supply contracts, the European Union intends to set a hard deadline for the termination of such contracts by member countries.
