The Netherlands and Germany, at the request of NATO, will supply Slovakia with American Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) to replace the S-300 systems transferred to Ukraine, the Dutch Ministry of Defense said.
“At the request of NATO, Germany and the Netherlands are installing Patriot air defense systems in the area of the Sliac airbase in central Slovakia. Today, a final decision has been made that the systems will be deployed. They are designed to enhance the allies' deterrence capabilities and protect the territory of Slovakia and its inhabitants from any missile threat. Slovakia borders on Ukraine. Patriot air defense systems will be on duty from mid-April,” the statement said.
The S-300 is a family of more than fifteen variants of air defense systems designed to destroy tactical and strategic aircraft.
This type of air defense system was developed in the USSR in the first half of the 1970s. Serial production of the system (modification S-300PT) was launched in 1975.
The S-300 air defense system consists of a command post with a detection RADAR (RLS), with which up to six anti-aircraft missile systems (SAMs) are associated

On March 16, the American television channel CNN, citing its own sources, reported that the Slovak authorities had previously approved the transfer of air defense systems to Ukraine. To do this, the country's authorities were negotiating with US and NATO allies about compensation from another air defense system. In its capacity, according to the interlocutors of the channel, the American Patriot system was considered.
