A new study has found that blue surgical face masks are only 10% effective in preventing
covid-19 infection. Researchers from the University of Waterloo,
CANADA, found that most fabric masks were only one-tenth as effective against
CORONAVIRUS because they did not properly cover the face. N95 or KN95 masks were the most effective at filtering aerosols.
Scientists have highlighted the best and worst protection against COVID-19
Most of the blue surgical face masks used by many during the pandemic are not enough to avoid infecting people with COVID-19, a disturbing new study has found, writes
PIONERPRODUKT.
A study conducted at the University of Waterloo in Canada found that N95 or KN95 masks were best at keeping aerosol droplets spreading from the mask wearer's mouth.
Blue cloth surgical masks, which became popular during the coronavirus pandemic, were found to be only 10 percent effective because they do not properly cover the face.
"There is no doubt that wearing any kind of protective mask is useful both for protection in the immediate vicinity and at a distance indoors," said study leader Sergei Jarusiewicz, professor of mechanical and mechatronic engineering, in a statement. - However, there is a very serious difference in the effectiveness of different masks when
it comes to controlling aerosol droplets."
Professor Jarusiewicz and his team tell us that many people wear masks that do not fit their face properly, as opposed to N95 masks, which fit the wearer's face snugly.
This allows aerosol droplets to pass through several holes between a person's face and the fabric mask, which can contribute to the spread of COVID-19 in crowded places.
The N95 mask, on the other hand, is able to filter more than 50 percent of the aerosol droplets while the other half disperses over the user's
HEAD.
"A lot of this may seem like common sense," comments Jarusiewicz. - For example, there's a reason practitioners wear N95 masks - they work much better. The innovation here is that we have provided hard numbers and rigorous analysis to support this assumption."
Professor Jarusiewicz's team added that ventilation tests have shown that even modest ventilation provides about the same level of protection as the highest quality masks.
Earlier in August, President Joe Biden's former COVID-19 advisor and chief epidemiologist warned Americans that "many of the face coverings people wear are not very effective."
Michael Osterholm told CNN that people need to start wearing N95 respirators, which are more effective against COVID-19.
"We're in a very unfortunate situation, we've really led our country into a confusion that really misses the main point, which is that we need to focus on vaccine, vaccine and again vaccine," said Osterholm,
DIRECTOR of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.
He said, "We know today that many of the covering wipes that people wear are not very effective in reducing any movement of the virus in or out."
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been criticized for its confusing stance on masks after the CDC rescinded its recommendations on masks. Federal officials in the United States say new data have shown that vaccinated people infected with COVID-19 can transmit the coronavirus, prompting them to recommend that everyone wear a mask indoors in areas with high transmission rates.
The states of Texas and Florida have advocated a ban on masks in school classrooms, but on Friday, the Texas Supreme
COURT rejected Governor Greg Abbott's latest no-mask proposal. Governor Abbott, who tested positive for coronavirus on Tuesday, is leading the anti-mask movement along with his Republican colleague, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
School boards and local officials fear a rapid rise in
covid infections in Texas amid the spread of the Delta variant, arguing that masks are needed for children too young to receive the coronavirus vaccine. This is despite the fact that the virus is said to pose almost zero risk to children, as well as evidence showing that masks impede children's learning and cause psychological harm.
As of Saturday, nearly 19,000 new cases had been confirmed in Texas, with 190 new deaths, according to the Texas Department of
HEALTH. Florida reported more than 150,000 new cases for the week and nearly 1,500 new deaths from the coronavirus.
But local officials are encouraged by President Joe Biden's stance, who has warned that he is "very concerned" about states like Texas that defy masks, and promises to provide financial aid to school districts in Florida that impose masks in defiance of Governor DeSantis.
Meanwhile, Democratic-led state and city leaders (including California, Illinois, Kentucky, and New Jersey) have quickly begun imposing mask-wearing requirements against COVID-19 and vaccines in the face of the Delta option. In Washington, Governor Jay Inslee imposed mandatory vaccinations for all school employees, including bus drivers and janitors.
U.S. health officials on Wednesday announced plans to release repeat vaccines to all Americans to bolster their protection amid a surge in variant Delta and signs that vaccines are declining in effectiveness.
President Biden recently "prescribed" mandatory vaccinations for various government employees, including federal employees, military personnel and nurses. The president also praised companies that prescribe vaccinations for their employees and urged others to follow their lead.
