“Disease X” is only a hypothetical threat, but the Russian healthcare system is ready for it, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko told RIA Novosti .

“Disease X” is a shorthand designation for a disease that has the potential to trigger a pandemic. It is assumed that it can be caused by a microorganism still unknown to mankind . “Disease X” was discussed at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 17.

In 2018, the World Health Organization included Disease X in its list of priority diseases to speed up the identification of a pathogen that could potentially lead to a new pandemic. The organization estimates that its mortality rate could be 20 times higher than that of COVID-19 .

Rospotrebnadzor believes that interest in “disease X” is associated not with scientific, but with economic reasons. According to the department, discussing this topic is beneficial to large pharmaceutical companies.
