Russian Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko said that in Russians infected with "omicron" the disease is asymptomatic or with minor symptoms. He made the corresponding statement in an interview with the Russia 1 TV channel.

“I want to say that among the sick [omicron strain] are people who already have immunity to the coronavirus strain. Many. And the course against this background is either asymptomatic or with minor clinical manifestations, ”he said.

According to him, today there is no threat to the life of patients, their condition is not "aggravated" and they receive minimal therapy. “Of course, we don’t have any large clinical cases yet, but we got in touch with our colleagues from South Africa <...> we are discussing further steps of interaction in order to study in more detail and understand what features there are,” Murashko added.

The emergence of a new strain of coronavirus "omicron" in South Africa and Botswana was reported by British scientists at the end of November. It has since spread to 63 countries, according to the WHO.

On December 13, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova reported that omicron had been found in 16 out of 177 Russians who had returned from South Africa. All of them are under surveillance.

To prevent the spread of the strain, the Russian authorities introduced a mandatory 14-day quarantine for arrivals from South Africa and neighboring countries. In addition, since November 28, Russia has banned the entry of foreigners from the territories of Lesotho, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique and Madagascar, as well as from Hong Kong, Tanzania and Eswatini.
