The Russian Ministry of Defense again offers the Ukrainian formations at the Azovstal plant in Mariupol to surrender, since no one used the gum corridor proposed by RUSSIA on April 19. This was stated by the HEAD of the National Center for Defense Control of Russia, Colonel-General Mikhail Mizintsev.
According to him, from 14:00 on Wednesday (April 20), Ukrainian servicemen located on the territory of the plant were asked to stop hostilities and lay down their arms. “The leadership of the Russian Federation guarantees the preservation of life, complete safety and the provision of qualified medical care to all who laid down their arms,” the general said.
He also noted that information about the next opportunity to surrender for those surrounded at Azovstal will be transmitted via radio channels every 30 minutes. Mezintsev specified that humanitarian convoys with buses and ambulances would be deployed in advance near the plant in three directions.
Before the outbreak of hostilities, the Azovstal plant was considered one of the largest metallurgical enterprises in Ukraine. The plant is part of the metallurgical division of the Metinvest group, the main shareholders of which are Rinat Akhmetov's SCM group and Vadim Novinsky's Smart Holding.
The production capacity of the enterprise allowed it to produce up to 5.7 million tons of pig iron, 5.3 million tons of converter steel and 4.7 million tons of finished rolled products per year.
