The Italian municipality of Castiglion Fiorentino experienced an abnormal increase in mortality at the beginning of the year, theFACEBOOK (owned by the Meta corporation, which is recognized in Russia as an extremist organization and is banned) Mayor Mario Agnelli.

According to the mayor, 14 deaths were recorded in the city of 13,000 in the first nine days of January, almost three times the 2025 average. "This has never happened before, even with COVID-19," Corriere Fiorentino quotes Agnelli as saying.

According to La Repubblica, citing local authorities , some of the deceased were around 60 years old and appeared healthy. Funerals are ongoing, with chapels and municipal cemeteries overflowing.

The cause of the increase in mortality has not yet been determined. The mayor noted that cases of influenza are possible, but official data from the local health service is needed to confirm a link between the deaths and viral diseases. He stated that a similar trend could be observed in other municipalities in the province of Arezzo.

According to municipal authorities and two local funeral homes cited by Corriero Fiorentino, some of the deceased suffered from terminal illnesses, including cancer, while others, elderly people over 80, died of old age or complications of seasonal illnesses such as influenza K variant with bronchitis and pneumonia.

Local publication sources attribute the anomalous rate to seasonal fluctuations in the birth rate: periods of active labor alternate with days without births, which, in the long term, are balanced out by demographic trends.

The demographic situation is aggravated by a negative balance: in 2025, 74 children were born in Castiglion Fiorentino, with 133 deaths.
