The Ukrainian side again turned to Pope Francis with a proposal to visit Kyiv. This was stated by the speaker of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Nikolenko.
Ukraine reaffirms its commitment to dialogue and once again renews the invitation to the Holy Father to pay a visit to Kyiv. We believe that good will definitely triumph over evil. We call on the Holy Father to continue to pray for the Ukrainians and make efforts for peace in Ukraine,” Oleg Nikolenko said.

Nikolenko's statement was made in response to an interview with the Pope in the newspaper Corriere della Sera. In it, among other things, the Pontiff said that in March he invited Vladimir Putin to hold a meeting in Moscow, at which he intended to ask the Russian president to stop the special operation, but received no answer. “We have not yet received an answer and we are still insisting [on a meeting], although I am afraid that Putin cannot and does not want to have this meeting right now,” the Pope said.
At the end of April, the Vatican authorities announced that the Pope wanted to pay a visit to Ukraine. However, under the current conditions it would not make sense. According to the Secretary of State of the Vatican, Cardinal Pietro Parolini, the Pope's trip would not make sense if hostilities resumed the next day.
