Washington's campaign to expel RUSSIA from the UN Human Rights Council is a theater of absurdity, since the United States itself has repeatedly violated the foundations of humanitarian law and does not meet the criteria for membership in the council. This was reported to RIA Novosti by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin.

“The United States, which positions itself as the locomotive of democracy and human rights, in fact does not even meet the formal criteria for membership in the UN Human Rights Council,” Vershinin said.

According to him, out of 12 major international human rights conventions and optional protocols to them, the American side has ratified only five such documents. Vershinin noted that the United States today is a country where manifestations of racism and racial discrimination have become systemic and structural.

“And how many times over the past 20 years has Washington acted as an aggressor, unleashing wars at its own discretion in all regions of the world? Did the Americans bear any responsibility for numerous violations of human rights and international humanitarian law <...> And now, a state with such a “track record” in the human rights sphere is taken to judge which of the members of the UN Human Rights Council is worthy of remaining in this body ? The theater of the absurd - it is difficult to call this situation in another way, ”concluded the diplomat.

Russia decided to withdraw early from the UN Human Rights Council Politics

On April 7, the UN General Assembly suspended Russia's participation in the Human Rights Council. 93 countries voted for the adoption of the resolution. 58 countries abstained from voting, including Armenia and Azerbaijan.
