In 2022, the Russian leader did not attend the summit, citing "his schedule and the need for him to be in the Russian Federation," according to presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov .

In 2025, Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump , and Xi Jinping could have attended the summit in South Africa simultaneously. This would have been Trump's first summit of his second term. During his first term, he held his first face-to-face meeting with Putin at the 2017 G20 summit in Hamburg. Since 2019, Trump has criticized the G20 summits. During his speech in Osaka, he criticized the policy of limiting industrial emissions, which, according to the US president, negatively impacts American industry.
