How businesses can talk about politics without ruining their reputation: Coinbase case

In 2020, many American companies supported protests against racism, but the HEAD of the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, Brian Armstrong, said that his firm is "out of politics."What were the implications for the business and what could have been done differently

it is generally accepted that work is definitely not the place where you should declare your political position. However, in recent years, the rule has lost its relevance. Applicants are increasingly more important than the value of the companies in which they get a job. Employers, in turn, are gradually learning to look at employees not as "units of human capital", but as living people with their own views, anxieties and needs. Politics is no longer a taboo in the corporate world, but many executives and PR managers still don't understand how to respond to high-profile events in public and political life. You can’t ignore it, but not everyone can talk about these topics and not get accusations of hypocrisy. The anger of workers and the public in response to a careless statement can be terrible, even if the company's position is the absence of any position.

For almost the entire June 2020, the United States was rocked by the protests that followed the murder of George Floyd: on May 25, in Minneapolis, police officer Derek Chauvin detained an African-American Floyd and pressed his neck to the ground with his knee. The policeman held him in this position for 8 minutes, Floyd died. The video of the arrest has gone viral. The tragedy once again raised the issue of racism and police violence against black people in the United States, and the Black Lives Matter movement became nationwide. Many companies issued statements in his support, including Silicon Valley corporations - GOOGLE, FACEBOOK (now known as Meta - recognized as an extremist organization whose activities are banned in RUSSIA - RBC Pro), Amazon and others. However, Coinbase did not react to the situation in any way.
