India issues 'final warning' to Twitter over new rules

Twitter has not brought its work in line with the new rules for social networks, which came into force on May 26.The authorities warned the corporation about "unintended consequences" because of this

Twitter has one last chance to bring its work in India into line with the country's new rules for social media, or the company will face "unforeseen consequences," Indian authorities said. This is with reference to a letter sent to the corporation, according to REUTERS.

The new rules were announced in February and went into effect on May 26. They involve tightening regulation of content on social networks, as well as strengthening the obligation of companies to respond to official requests from the authorities. In addition, social networks are required to create mechanisms for handling complaints and appoint persons responsible for coordinating interaction with law enforcement agencies.

The authorities said that social networks should take greater responsibility for the content that is distributed on their platforms, as well as remove it within 36 hours of receiving the appropriate order.

India's Ministry of Technology sent notices to Twitter about the new rules on May 26 and 28, but in response, the company "did not provide the clarifications requested" and showed no willingness to work under the new rules, the agency said.
