
Patients with allergies get sick with COVID-19 less often than usual, scientists have not yet reached an exact hypothesis on this matter. This was announced by the director of the Institute of Immunology of the FMBA of Russia Musa Khaitov, RIA Novosti reports.
“About a year and a half has passed since the beginning of the pandemic, but from the very beginning there was evidence that patients with allergies are less likely to get coronavirus infection,” he said.
Khaitov also clarified that, according to foreign studies, for patients with allergic bronchial asthma, COVID-19 is not a factor that can increase the risk of a severe course of the disease. “What is the reason for this, while it is difficult to say, various hypotheses are expressed, but they require confirmation,” the scientist added.

Marina Vershinina, an expert at the CMD Center for Molecular Diagnostics of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, specified that the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in Russia ranges from 10 to 24% of the population, and seasonal allergies account for up to 45% of all cases of rhinitis.
