Smoking increases the likelihood of a severe course of covid-19, this is a fair fact. Sergey Voznesensky, Associate Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases at RUDN University, told RBC about this, commenting on a study by Japanese scientists who found that smokers almost double the risk of a severe course of CORONAVIRUS.

“Directly smoking, tobacco smoke and the toxins it contains affect the ciliary apparatus. If tobacco smoke enters, it paralyzes the work of these cilia. And thus delays all pathogens, including the coronavirus,” the scientist explained.

Voznesensky also added that tobacco smoking leads to bronchopulmonary diseases, to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which aggravates the course of any respiratory disease.

The HEAD of the laboratory of especially dangerous infections of the Federal Research Center for Fundamental and Translational Medicine (FRC FTM), professor of virology Alexander Chepurnov, in a conversation with RBC, also agreed with the conclusions of Japanese scientists.
