The Harju County Court of Estonia decided to release the former editor-in-chief of Sputnik Meedia Elena Cherysheva, who was detained on suspicion of violating international sanctions, on bail. This was reported to RBC in the press service of the Russian Embassy in Tallinn.

Cherysheva was charged under Art. 93.1 of the Estonian Penitentiary Code (“Crimes against peace and violation of international sanctions”).

“There is no reason to believe that these accusations are justified. As of today, we are dealing with persecution for dissent on ethnic grounds, an attempt to intimidate Russian citizens who remain loyal to their state,” the embassy said.

Cherysheva, along with another former employee of Sputnik Meedia, Mati-Dmitry Terestal, was detained on April 6 in Tallinn. Their colleague told RIA Novosti that the journalists were searched for eight hours, after which they stopped communicating.

Cherysheva herself later told the agency that the search lasted 16 hours, after which they were taken to a pre-trial detention center, then interrogated, and then a trial took place. “The judge made a decision - a ban on leaving the country, it is forbidden to leave the house for more than three days,” the journalist said, indicating that their equipment, phones, and cash were confiscated.

Delfi, citing the prosecutor, said that a case was opened against the detainees for maintaining economic ties in circumvention of international sanctions. According to the investigation, the journalists handed over to the person against whom sanctions were imposed , money, presumably received from Russia. In addition, as noted by the portal, Cherysheva and Terestala continued to manage Sputnik Meedia, although the EU banned its operation on its territory since March 2.
