Former Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Army General Anatoly Kvashnin, who commanded the United Group of Forces in Chechnya in 1994, died at the age of 75 after contracting the CORONAVIRUS infection covid-19 . This was announced on its website by the Club of Russian military leaders.

“Army General Kvashnin died today from covid,” Nikolai Deryabin, head of the staff of the Club of Military Leaders, told RBC. According to him, the time and place of the burial of General Kvashnin will be determined by relatives.

Kvashnin was born in Ufa in 1946. After graduating from the military department of the Kurgan Machine-Building Institute in 1969, he was drafted into the army with the rank of lieutenant engineer, and then decided to continue his military career. In 1976 he graduated from the Military Academy of Armored Forces, by 1982 he had risen to the rank of colonel and became commander of a tank division. In 1984 he became a major general.

In 1989 he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff, was the first deputy commander of the 28th Army, and from May to August 1992 - the commander of the 7th Tank Army. In August 1992, Kvashnin was transferred to the General Staff, where he became deputy and then first deputy head of the Main Operational Directorate. In February 1993, Kvashin was awarded the rank of lieutenant general, and in February 1995 - colonel general.
