The head of WHO reported on incoming threats via SMS

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, told The Washington Post (WP) that in connection with the coronavirus pandemic, he began to receive threatening messages.

“There are many messages with threats to life, threats are sent directly via SMS. I don’t know where they got my number from,” he said. According to the newspaper, an alarm system has been installed in the house of Ghebreyesus, and WHO staff are urging him to hire security.

Ghebreyesus did not specify from whom exactly they were coming and when the threats began.

WP notes that the head of WHO has previously criticized the Ethiopian authorities because of the conflict in the Tigray region, where, according to the UN, millions of displaced people "live in an atmosphere of constant fear and suffer from malnutrition." Ghebreyesus is from the region and has expressed concern that Tigray is "virtually under blockade".

The head of WHO considers his return to his homeland unsafe. “But what did I say about Tigray? I'm just telling the truth," he said.

In addition, Ghebreyesus put pressure on China to reopen the investigation into the origin of the coronavirus. He also urged Beijing to abandon the "zero covid" strategy, which includes harsh measures - social contact tracing of citizens, isolation, strict quarantine and travel restrictions.
