Hungary needs to be prepared for serious attacks from the EU, as Brussels uses all available forms of blackmail against Budapest. This was stated by the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjártó, his words are quoted by the HAON publication.
“Now there is practically no such type of blackmail that Brussels would not resort to in relation to Hungary ... We were always attacked, attacked violently, but in the end it always turned out that we were right. And in the coming period, we, of course, need to prepare for future serious attacks, ”Szijjártó said.

As examples of Hungarian non-conformism, Szijjarto cited the refusal to accept migrants and the purchase of a vaccine against COVID-19 in Russia and China. According to the minister, the decisions of the Hungarian government have never been in the mainstream, "but have always been successful." Now the Hungarian authorities insist on a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. In particular, to avoid a recession amid the energy crisis.
The Hungarian authorities have repeatedly publicly opposed financial and military support to Ukraine or the imposition of new sanctions against Russia. In early December, the Associated Press, citing sources, wrote that Hungary had blocked a €18 billion ($18.9 billion) bailout package for Ukraine in 2023.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the continued allocation of money to Kyiv will lead to the overall debt of the European Union. Orban proposed to determine the total amount that the EU is ready to give Ukraine, and to distribute it "proportionately and fairly" among the countries. Hungary itself intends to pay Kyiv 60-70 billion forints a year (about €150 million) under a bilateral agreement.
Later, the Financial Times learned that Hungary opposed a new package of sanctions against Russia and a proposal to double the EU fund that finances arms supplies to Ukraine. In October, Szijjarto said that Hungary would not support additional EU sanctions against Russia in the energy sector and that Budapest needed further cooperation with Gazprom as a reliable supplier of natural gas in the face of a long-term energy crisis in Europe.
