After consulting with Brussels, the German and Italian authorities decided to allow their companies to open ruble accounts with Gazprombank to buy Russian gas. it is reported by REUTERS.
According to sources, regulators in Italy and Germany sought advice from the European Commission (EC) on the issue of legal payment methods for gas contracts with RUSSIA, after which, having received the necessary clarifications, they decided to allow companies to open ruble accounts with Gazprombank to pay for energy imports from Russia in national currency.
On May 16, Brussels provided EU members with two sets of written instructions on how to make payments for Russian gas imports without violating sanctions. However, at a meeting behind closed doors, EC representatives advised against opening accounts with Gazprombank in Russian currency.
