António Guterres has been re-elected for a second term as UN Secretary General, Reuters reports.

“I have the honor to announce that António Guterres has been appointed by acclamation as UN Secretary General for a second term from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2026,” the EFE news agency quoted Volkan Bozkir, Chairman of the General Assembly, as saying.

Guterres called Sputnik V one of the key factors in the fight against COVID Society

On June 8, his candidacy was supported by the Security Council of the organization and recommended to the General Assembly to appoint Guterres for a second term.

The UN Secretary General is elected for five years.

António Guterres of Portugal has been the UN Secretary General since January 1, 2017. He was born in Lisbon in 1949, was engaged in science and politics, and in 1974 he took an active part in the Carnation Revolution (a bloodless military coup in Portugal). After the overthrow of the regime of the New State, he entered the government of Portugal, in 1995 he became the country's prime minister.
