Relations between China and the United States have escalated following reports of Pelosi's alleged visit to Taiwan. Beijing is reminding Washington of its One China policy and warning of retaliation if a high-ranking official like Pelosi visits the island. The US is concerned about China's statements, The New York Times wrote that the White House tried to persuade the congresswoman to refuse to visit Taiwan. States urge China to refrain from escalating tensions.

Taiwan declared secession from China in 1949, during the civil war. Beijing does not recognize the independence of the island and considers it its province. The administrative status of the region has not been settled.

Washington does not have diplomatic relations with the authorities of the partially recognized Republic of China, but since 1979 there has been a law according to which the United States can supply weapons to the region for protection. At the same time, Washington declares that it adheres to the "one China" policy.

Pelosi announced her Asian tour at the end of July, in which she will visit Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan. She did not name Taiwan among the regions planned for the visit. Pelosi indicated that the purposes of the visit to the Indo-Pacific are "to reaffirm America's unwavering commitment" to its "allies and friends" there, as well as to discuss issues related to "peace and security, economic growth and trade, the COVID-19 pandemic , the climate crisis, human rights and democratic governance”.
