The Tonight program has been airing on Channel One since September 2012. Andrey Malakhov was the first to lead it, then Maxim Galkin and Yulia Menshova replaced him. The last episode of the program with the participation of Galkin was aired on February 19.

The TV channel stopped releasing the program after the start of the special operation in Ukraine, as well as other entertainment programs. On Channel One, the changes in the broadcasting schedule were explained by “maximum attention to socio-political events.”

Galkin spoke out against military operations in Ukraine on the day the special operation of the operation began, February 24. The comedian did not make statements about emigration from Russia, his wife, singer Alla Pugacheva, also denied leaving the country. The artist said that "holidays, vacations and treatment are not considered emigration."

According to RBC sources, after Galkin's statements, federal channels refused to air advertising for Uralsib Bank with his participation.

At the end of April, Galkin wrote on Instagram (owned by Meta, whose activities are recognized as extremist in Russia and banned) that he plans to hold concerts in Israel and send part of his earnings to help Ukrainian refugees.
