What explains the choice of Tim Walz as the vice-presidential candidate?

Walz has faced repeated criticism from Republicans for his actions during the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter unrest. During his first term as Minnesota governor, the state legislature was divided: Democrats controlled the House of Representatives and Republicans controlled the Senate. Walz's bills, including those on state-funded school lunches, often faced resistance from Republicans, forcing him to constantly compromise.

In 2022, Walz was successfully re-elected to a second term, and Democrats won control of the state Senate. This allowed them to repeal virtually all Republican-imposed abortion restrictions, legalize recreational marijuana use, and preserve support programs for transgender teens. Walz also placed a strong emphasis on another issue important to Democrats: combating climate change.

As CNN notes, Kamala Harris had to find a presidential running mate in a record-breaking timeframe, previously unseen in American history. On July 21, incumbent US President and virtually unopposed Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the race, and by the evening of July 22, after hours of phone calls with congressmen and party officials, Harris had secured her place as her replacement. On August 5, she was officially nominated as the Democratic Party's 2024 nominee , and on August 6, Harris and Walz will speak at their first joint campaign rally in Pennsylvania. They will then travel to Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada—swing states where Democrats and Republicans enjoy roughly equal support.

CNN sources note that Walz was initially far from the front-runner for the vice presidential nomination, but Harris was impressed by his sincerity, and a warm rapport developed between them during their final meeting on August 4. "He sounds and looks like most of the voters we lost to Trump," a seasoned Democratic Party official told the channel. CNN also notes that Walz endorsed Harris the day after Biden's withdrawal and has since been one of her campaign's most vocal supporters.

Like Trump's number two, J.D. Vance, Walz hails from rural America—a small town of 3,500, notes the AP. Even in his first election in 2006, he demonstrated an ability to attract conservative voters (his ownership of a firearm added to his appeal), and as governor, he worked effectively with both Democrats and Republicans. "In choosing Walz, Harris favored a skilled politician with executive experience and emphasized the importance of Midwestern swing states like Wisconsin and Michigan," explains The Washington Post.

As governor, Walz focused primarily on domestic policy issues, but also expressed his views on foreign policy, including the conflict in Ukraine . In April 2023, the Minnesota governor participated in an online meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and in February 2024, he visited the Ukrainian embassy to sign a cooperation agreement between Minnesota and the Chernihiv Oblast. "Minnesota will continue to support Ukraine in its fight for freedom and democracy," he wrote on the social media platform X.
