More than 40 athletes infected with coronavirus at the Olympics

The WHO noted that in recent months, many countries have seen an increase in covid-19 cases, so it is not surprising that athletes in Paris are also becoming infected.

More than 40 athletes have been infected with CORONAVIRUS at the Olympic Games in Paris, World HEALTH Organization (WHO) representative Maria von Kerkove said at a press conference.

"In recent months, regardless of the season, many countries have seen spikes in COVID-19 , including at the Olympics, where at least 40 athletes have now tested positive . It is not surprising that athletes are getting infected because, as I said, the virus is circulating quite actively in other countries," Von Kerkove said.

Among the top athletes in Paris, Britain's Adam Peaty tested positive the day after winning silver in the 100m breaststroke. Australia's Lani Pallister withdrew from the women's 1500m freestyle due to illness.

The WHO previously said that there had been an increase in coronavirus cases in France ahead of the Olympics.

The Paris Olympics run from July 26 to August 11.
