US President Joe Biden will meet with his top political aides this weekend in a “last-ditch effort” to salvage his campaign and try to convince undecided Democrats that he can win re-election, Bloomberg writes.
The agency recalls that after a disastrous debate with Donald Trump, Biden's ratings remain low, and more and more donors and senior Democratic Party politicians are demanding that he withdraw from the presidential race. Democrats' calls intensified after the White House announced that Biden tested positive for CORONAVIRUS on July 18 , Bloomberg notes.
“I believe the president should end his campaign,” longtime presidential ally Sen. Sherrod Brown said Friday, noting that the party should focus on ideological campaign issues including American jobs and abortion rights.
At the same time, Biden's closest advisers say his determination to go to the polls has only strengthened in recent days. Thus, Vice President Kamala Harris recently told major donors of the Democratic Party that the president “has maintained a path to victory,” Bloomberg writes. And campaign chair Jennifer O'Malley Dillon said in a recent interview with CBS that Biden is "the best person to challenge Donald Trump."
The rift among Democrats stands in stark contrast to the scenes that unfolded during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where former party rivals rallied behind Trump, who accepted the official Republican nomination for president, the agency concluded. The event took place after an assassination attempt on a Republican at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, where he received a gunshot wound to the ear.
“I look forward to returning to the campaign trail next week to continue to expose the threat posed by Donald Trump's Project 2025 while championing my own record and vision for America,” Biden himself said Friday. According to his campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz, the current US president knows that "the stakes in this election are high" but there are still "many days before the vote."
The US presidential elections will take place on November 5th. The Democratic Party is scheduled to formally nominate its candidate at its convention in August.
On June 28, a debate between Biden and Trump took place on CNN; viewers of the channel awarded the victory to the latter. The current US President explained his failure at this event by fatigue and allowed himself to withdraw from the election race if “the almighty Lord comes down from heaven” and orders it to be done. According to a Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll, 82% of voters think Biden, 81, is too old, while 59% said Trump is too dangerous.
