Italian energy company Eni is preparing to open a ruble account with Gazprombank to convert gas payments into Russian currency, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The interlocutors of the agency noted that this step is a precautionary measure for Eni, as the company continues to seek clarification from the authorities of Italy and the European Union regarding acceptable actions on the issue of payment for Russian gas supplies.

German company Uniper SE, which buys large volumes of fuel from RUSSIA, also said it could continue buying gas from Moscow without violating sanctions, Bloomberg notes.

Representatives from several EU countries have demanded clearer guidance from Brussels on what is acceptable and what is not acceptable options for buying gas from Russia, insisting that the current instructions are too ambiguous, Bloomberg sources said.

A number of countries, they said, are demanding clarification that buyers of Russian gas have no detours to accept Moscow's terms. In particular, the agency writes, Warsaw considers the selective interpretation of the instructions of the Russian leadership a tool for splitting solidarity in the European Union.

According to a scheme proposed and approved by President Vladimir Putin, Russia obliges buyers from the list of "unfriendly countries" to open two accounts with Gazprombank - in foreign currency and in ruble. After payment is received on the first account, the bank independently sells funds on the Moscow Exchange, after which it credits rubles to the account. The European Commission urged not to follow the conditions of Moscow, explaining that this would be considered an attempt to circumvent sanctions against Russia. After Poland and Bulgaria disagreed with the new payment format, Gazprom suspended gas supplies to these countries.

Gas imports from Russia cover 40% of Italy's needs, the newspaper La Repubblica wrote.

At the end of March, the HEAD of Eni, Claudio Descalzi, called the scenario of paying for gas according to Russian conditions impossible. “This is not provided for by the contract, which specifies payments in euros. You cannot change this unilaterally. There must be an agreement for such a change,” he insisted. A month later, Bloomberg sources reported that the company still plans to agree to Russia's demands. The agency then noted that before the company paid in European currency, the next payment should take place no earlier than the second half of May.
