Amazon announced the dismissal of 9 thousand employees

Online retailer Amazon will cut about 9,000 employees, CEO Andy Jesse has announced.

The reductions will primarily affect the structure of the AWS cloud platform, the People, Experience and Technology (PXT) division, which deals with personnel issues, as well as the advertising department and the Twitch division. Dismissing workers, according to Jesse, will begin in the coming weeks.

Amazon began laying off employees en masse last November. Then the company cut about 10 thousand jobs as part of measures to abandon unprofitable or inefficient divisions. The layoffs affected departments involved in device development (including Alexa voice assistant), human resources and retail.

Then last January, Jesse announced that the company intends to lay off another 18,000 employees in stores and human resources departments.

The cuts follow massive hiring at Amazon during the CORONAVIRUS pandemic, writes CNBC. By the end of 2021, the total number of employees of the company in divisions around the world increased to more than 1.6 million people, compared with 798 thousand in the fourth quarter of 2019, the channel reports.

In addition, cuts were associated with a sharp increase in costs and slowing sales growth. By last November, Amazon's market capitalization had fallen 42% year-to-date to about $1 trillion. Investors were also concerned about declining consumer spending and Amazon's loss of logistics capacity due to the covid-19 pandemic .
