In Russia, 50,435 people died from alcohol-related causes in 2020, according to Rosstat data. In 2019, alcohol was the cause of death for 47,427 people. At the same time, in 2019, a decrease in mortality from alcohol by almost 2% was recorded compared to 2018, when 48,786 people died from this cause.

The number of deaths related to mental and behavioral disorders also increased in 2020. In 2020, Rosstat counted 24,159 people who died from this cause. In 2019, there were 20% fewer deaths at 19,440. As in the case of alcohol-related deaths, the increase in deaths in this column followed a decrease recorded compared to 2018, when mental disorders caused 20,619 deaths .

The authorities revised the data on mortality from COVID-19 Economics

The Ministry of Health reported earlier about the increase in alcohol consumption and mortality due to it against the backdrop of self-isolation in the spring of 2020. In early May last year, the Head of the department, Mikhail Murashko, said that alcohol consumption in Russia during self-isolation increased by 2-3%. At the same time, the minister noted that in the context of the spread of Coronavirus infection, the use of alcohol is “categorically unacceptable”, since alcohol weakens the immune system. Some regions, taking this into account, introduced restrictions on the sale of alcohol - for example, Yakutia, Karelia, Bashkiria and a number of others.
