Never try unwashed berries on the market. How to pick the most delicious cherries

The press service of Rospotrebnadzor gave advice on how to choose, wash and store cherries. Thus, a good berry skin is clean, smooth, with a glossy shine, without dents and cracks. The matt surface, lack of gloss, indicates that the cherry was ripped long ago.
"The flesh of a quality berry is dense, firm. If the cherry is soft to the touch, it is likely that it has overripe, or has begun to spoil," the agency said.
As for the stalk, at least it should be first of all: "If it's not there, then at the place where it's attached to the berry, an entrance gate is formed to get dirt and germs." It's better if the stem is elastic, green in color. Dry, darkened stalk is found in long stored berries, which is likely to have a negative impact on their taste.
To choose the berries of a certain flavour, you can focus on the coloration: "Yellow and pink cherries are more delicate and watery, its taste is expressed vaguely, sour-sweet; darkly coloured cherry berries have a brighter, richer taste and sweetness.
How to wash cherries
Rospotrebnadzor reminded that during the ripening of berries they are affected by the sun, rain, as well as dust, gases, chemicals, insect larvae and a large number of microorganisms - infectious disease agents. 
The consumption of unwashed cherries may cause poisoning as well as infectious diseases. Rotavirus infection, salmonellosis, helminthiasis are particularly dangerous in childhood. For this reason, the agency strongly discourages tasting unwashed berries on the market.
Wash the cherries as follows: "Sprinkle the cherries in a colander. Wash the berries under a jet of cold running water, choosing the garbage with your hand. After washing, dry the cherries thoroughly." There is no point in scalding the berries with boiling water or using soap.
How do you store your cherries
If you have bought berries, but do not plan to eat them soon, immediately put them in storage in the fridge. It is better to put cherries in a paper bag or a plastic container. Do not wash such berries or separate them from the petioles so as not to reduce the shelf life. In the fridge, the cherries will stay fresh for up to ten days.
Another important hint: cherries should be kept separate from ethylene-producing fruits (apples, bananas), otherwise the cherry will quickly deteriorate under the influence of ethylenes.
The pros and cons of cherries
Rospotrebnadzor noted that the content of vitamin C in cherries is quite high for berries (consumption of 100 grams of berries covers almost 20% of the daily requirement). In significant quantities contained in cherries potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron. In terms of fiber content, cherries are superior even to peaches and apricots. In red and burgundy varieties of berries more vitamin A and iron, in pink - vitamin C, white - less often cause allergies.
But eating large quantities of cherries (more than 300-400 grams) for a short time can cause diarrhoea. It cannot be eaten with acute gastritis with increased acidity. Sweet varieties are contraindicated for diabetes. 
- Be particularly careful when giving cherries to children, especially young children. Children under two or three years of age can only be offered berries with a pre-extracted bone. If a baby accidentally swallows a bone, it is not dangerous, but the consequences of inhaling it may be irreparable - warned the agency.
